Deputy President Paul Mashatile says government is working on various initiatives which will ensure that South Africa “does not collapse” amid rising fuel prices.
Mashatile spoke to the media after a Good Friday service at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg by the Amandla Ngawethu Universal Church.
Mashatile says government is looking at increasing its capacity to refine crude oil.

“With the war of the US, Israel, and Iran, we see that we may have challenges, for instance, with crude oil. As a result, prices of oil are going up. Once prices of oil go up, prices of food go up. That’s something that we need to work together on to explain to our people what the challenges are. We may not resolve that matter easily, but government has decided we will increase our capacity to refine our own crude and what we can get from West Africa. So, we are looking at other initiatives that will make sure that the country does not collapse.”
