Archbishop Thabo Makgoba speaking at his Easter vigil, 4 April 2026.
Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba says with the state of geopolitics and conflict, it is difficult to celebrate the Easter period.
He highlighted this in his Easter vigil on Saturday night, raising the current state of affairs in various regions around the world.
He said Easter should be a time of celebration, renewal and hope, but it is difficult with all the conflict around the globe.
Makgoba referred to the situation in Sudan, saying it is a repeat of the genocide of 20 years ago.
He also touched on the Ukraine as well as the Middle East wars.
“The Middle East is consumed by war and those celebrating Easter in Jerusalem and other cities and towns across the region do so under threat of drones and missiles. Not only that, the conflict also threatens to spread and its effects especially the restrictions on oil and gas exports are being experienced across the globe. Escalating petrol and especially high diesel prices raise the spectra of rationing speed restrictions and higher food prices,” added Makgoba.
