The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) says the widely reported coronation of the Nigeria “Igbo king” in KuGompo was a misunderstanding.
The union says the event was a traditional Igbo ceremony known as “Igu Aru,” where they pray for rain and a good harvest.
The reported coronation sparked protests and condemnation.
NUSA founding president, Jason Osuafor says the ceremony also included the appointment of a community leader to coordinate cultural activities, not a king.
“It wasn’t expected. It was a hell of miscommunications. And our community has been out and about trying to explain what really transpired in East London [KuGompo] and also finding new ways of building new relationship and collaboration within the South African communities in order to get going,” says Osuafor.
