Surviving conjoined twin transferred to Steve Biko Hospital

The surviving twin who was born conjoined has been airlifted from the Mankweng Hospital to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

The Limpopo government says the twin boy was transferred for continued special care and a precautionary measure.

This after one of the conjoined twins passed away due to infections last week.

The Sithole twins, born in January attached at the abdomen, were successfully separated through an operation in mid-March.

Limpopo government spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha says Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi have recommended that the surviving twin be transferred.

“While the loss of Twin A has affected everyone, team Mankweng Hospital has been understandably deeply affected, hence it was critical to allow another team in a different and protected environment to continue with care. This was done as a precautionary measure. The highly complex procedure and the care of the twins since birth were managed by a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Nyaweleni Tshifularo. The provincial government remains in close contact with the medical teams and the family and will continue to provide the necessary support during this time.”
