IEC urges voter participation as election nominations near deadline

The Electoral Commission (IEC) says candidate nominations for the local government elections are expected to close at the end of July 2026.

Over 100 000 candidates are expected to contest approximately 9 600 council seats across the country in the elections which are expected to take place this year.

The commission’s Chairperson Mosotho Moepya has highlighted the importance of elections.

He was speaking at the unveiling of the commission’s logo in Midrand, Johannesburg .

“Elections are the most powerful expression of that participation. They are the moment when every citizen, regardless of status or circumstance, is equal. Equal in voice, equal in power and equal in their ability to shape the future of their community and their country. To withdraw from this process, to retreat from this participation is to surrender that power. It is to silence one’s voice at the very moment it is meant to be heard and heard loudly.”
