The Pietermaritzburg High Court in KwaZulu-Natal.
A 39-year-old man has appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Aleyka Shaik, who was pregnant with twins.
The accused has been remanded in custody until his bail hearing on April 7.
He allegedly stabbed the victim during an argument while she was collecting her daughter.
Ward 28 Councillor Renisha Singh says the community is shocked by the incident.
“The deep sadness, as well, to see a life taken over you know, so senselessly, without, you know, reason. And to see a mother that’s carrying twins left you more distraught than anything else. To be honest, there’s actually no words to even describe this kind of crime against our women. It’s heartless, it’s senseless, and really, it is truly a merciless crime against us,” said Singh.
