Letsie calls for swift action in Fort Hare probe

Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, Tebogo Letsie, says he is hopeful that disciplinary processes involving suspended University of Fort Hare Vice-Chancellor Professor Sakhele Buhlungu will be concluded soon.

Buhlungu was placed on precautionary suspension following the findings of a forensic investigation into the appointment of two Executive Directors.

The university says the appointments were made without approval from its Council.

Letsie has welcomed the council’s decision to act but says the process should be finalised quickly to restore stability.

He says the university needs to return to its core function of teaching and learning.

According to the university’s website, appointments of executive management, including the Executive Director for Infrastructure and Technology and the Executive Director for People Management and Engagement, require council approval before being finalised.

The matter remains under review as disciplinary processes continue.
