Mchunu demands proof amid corruption claims

Embattled police minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, has challenged KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to produce evidence of wrongdoing on his part.

This follows new information presented by Mkhwanazi before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee recently, which included a letter from an inmate alleging corrupt links between Mchunu and the incarcerated businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

In the letter, it’s alleged that there was an attempt by Mchunu’s lawyers to coerce Matlala into signing an affidavit denying he knew Mchunu.

Mchunu also confirmed in an interview with the SABC that he’s resuming his party duties as a member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC).

Mchunu spoke to the South African Broadcasting Committee (SABC) in an exclusive interview near Kwambonambi, in KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast.

“People in South Africa are allowed to speak freely, and we are in a democracy. However, please provide evidence and state the source of your claims so that everyone can verify them. It is not acceptable to keep making allegations and naming people without proof. I have never met Batohi. I also advised in that letter that any evidence should be submitted to the Madlanga Commission,” he says.
