The case against Bellarmine Mugabe, son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, and his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, has been postponed to next Tuesday by the Alexandra Regional Court.
The pair face charges of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm, and contravening the Immigration Act, following the alleged shooting of Mugabe’s gardener in Hyde Park in February.
Proceedings could not be finalised on Tuesday due to the absence of a senior prosecutor. However, the state and the defence say the plea agreement is at an advanced stage.
Mugabe’s attorney, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, says discussions are close to completion.
“Negotiations between the State and the defence are at an advanced stage, with Prosecutor Maphere indicating they are about ninety-eight percent complete; however, the senior public prosecutor was not available today to finalise the negotiations and proceed with the plea, and it is understood that the plea will be finalised next week as the matter has been remanded to the twenty-fourth of March.”
Good morning from the Alexandra Regional Court, where Bellarmine Mugabe and his co-accused Tobias Matonhodze will appear. We are likely to know WHETHER the state and the defence have reached a plea agreement, or there will be a straight plea. We will know shortly.… pic.twitter.com/evXW7xZjAj
