IFP leader urges eThekwini to honour the late Buthelezi with statue

A senior Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader has called on the eThekwini Municipality to erect a statue in honour of the late party leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in Durban.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled giant monuments of struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo earlier this month.

Speaking in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC and IFP NEC member Thulasizwe Buthelezi said the statues of Mandela and Tambo painted an incomplete picture of the country’s history.

Buthelezi says the late IFP leader also played a pivotal role in the country’s liberation.

“We applaud the decision of the municipality to erect thee statues of our leaders but it is incomplete without the statue of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi because he was the bridge between the ANC mission in exile of Oliver Tambo and the first Democratic order of Nelson Mandela. The bridge was Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Therefore, a third statue would bring the total picture into completion and we urge the eThekwini Municipality to do that.”
