Lesufi confirms Midrand water supply fully restored

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has declared that water has been fully restored in Midrand and surrounding areas.

Midrand has faced prolonged water shutdown in recent weeks.

This as the province has been experiencing severe, ongoing water shortages driven by high demand, and ageing infrastructure.

Delivering his 2026 State of the Province Address (SOPA), Lesufi indicates that the situation prevailed because of persistent system failures at Rand Water, which severely disrupted pumping to communities across the province.

He’s also pointed out that challenges mainly occur because of aging infrastructure, rather than absolute water unavailability.

The SOPA sets out the province’s plan of action for a pivotal year, which also includes the upcoming Local Government Elections.

Lesufi has acknowledged that some areas in the province continue to face a water crisis.

“The first suburb to be hit hard was Midrand lately we can now declare that water is has been fully restored in the Midrand area and surroundings. Another area that was hit was Soweto. We’ve now made great progress, except for Meadowlands zone 3 and zone 4 and areas receiving water from Doornkop Reservoir. Soweto is now restored with. Our engineers have assured us that areas that still don’t have water we are working around the clock to rectify this situation. We once more sincerely apologise to all our residents in all our province who still go through the inconveniences caused by this unfortunate situation.”

Crime

Lesufi has also stressed that Gauteng has to defeat crime, corruption and lawlessness in order to realise economic growth.

He emphasised that economic revitalisation, with the help of the private sector will in the immediate future, require that infrastructure be improved and the local government be fixed by accelerating service delivery.
