Accused in Marikana mass shooting to return to court on 2 March

The second accused involved in the mass shooting that claimed the lives of nine people at the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi in January appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, says the accused faces nine charges of murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder.

Ntabazalila says the case was postponed to 02 March for bail information.

His co-accused has previously abandoned his bail application and will return to court in April.  This follows a shooting incident at a tavern on 17 January. Nine people were killed and one victim critically injured.
