A South African military veteran has encouraged soldiers to continue to protect the country’s sovereignty and defend the nation with honour and discipline. William Siwanda was speaking on the sidelines of Saturday’s Armed Forces Day celebrations in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.
Armed Forces Day is commemorated annually in honour of the soldiers who died during the sinking of the SS Mendi on 21 February 1917 during World War One. Six hundred-and-46, including 616 South African soldiers lost their lives.

Siwanda has encouraged members of the South African National Defence Force to remain committed.
“I am happy that this year’s Armed Forces Day is celebrated in my hometown of Thohoyandou in Limpopo. As a veteran, we also today remember those soldiers who fought for freedom and also celebrate those who are still serving the country, they must serve the country with pride and dedication. I remember during my service we would do everything, cooking, fixing cars and first aid, the soldiers must continue to equip themselves as well and not just focus on one thing.”
