Forcing Emfuleni mayor to resign will deepen tensions: PAC

The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) says a move to force Emfuleni Municipality Mayor Sipho Radebe to step down will further cause tensions within the distressed municipality.

The party was reacting to reports that the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng allegedly asked Radebe to resign.

It reportedly cited the municipality’s ongoing financial strain and service delivery failures as some of the reasons for him to vacate his position.

PAC Secretary-General Apa Pooe says removing Radebe will further destabilise the embattled municipality.

“The reason is that every time there is an election or there is a new leadership, they tend to destabilise government and they tend to import whatever challenges they have within the party into the council and we cannot allow that.”

Radebe has since asked the ANC national leadership to intervene in the matter, arguing that the request for his resignation is neither politically fair nor factually accurate.

He says Emfuleni was already in serious decline when he assumed office in 2021.
