Analyst criticises Ekurhuleni Mayoral Committee reshuffle

Political Analyst Bheki Mngomezulu says the decision by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza to reshuffle his Mayoral Committee was strategically aimed at weakening the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the metro.

On Wednesday, seven of the 10  newly appointed MMCs were officially sworn at the OR Tambo Government Precinct in Germiston.

ActionSA’s Xolani Khumalo, as well as the EFF’s Leshaka Manamela and Thembi Msane, did not attend the ceremony after rejecting the decision to reshuffle the Mayoral Committee.

Mngomezulu says Xhakaza’s decision to reshuffle his cabinet was not a wise move.

“ It was definitely not a wise move especially on the eve of the local government elections. You don’t want to upset voters and upset potential coalition partners and during an election year, so definitely, it was not a wise move. So what Xakaza did, my view is that he didn’t take a unilateral decision, he would have consulted with some of his principles within the organisation and then he decided that he would reduce the number of the EFF members in mayoral committee from five to two and then of course weaken them in the process and then strengthen the ANC. Definitely this is not okay and not a good move.”
