N West cancels services of scholar transport operator after bus crash

The North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, MEC Wessels Morweng, says they will terminate the services of a scholar transport provider whose bus was involved in a crash yesterday.

The bus overturned after the steering wheel broke off.

The accident happened yesterday morning on a gravel road between Sleepsteen and Gerdau Farms.

Morweng visited the More Secondary School in Coligny, where several of the 71 learners involved in the crash attend.

One of them sustained serious injuries.

Morweng says this happens at a time when the department has just began acting on the recommendations of a South African Human Rights Council report.

“Last week, I had interaction with media houses wherein I was reporting back to the Human Rights Commission report, which indicated that there is a systematic failure with regards to this project. The department has since taken the decision to re-do the project. Now, this vindicates what the MEC has been saying, but of importance, we will make sure that we terminate the service provider because the cause of accident is mechanical failure that has been identified.”
