No place for corruption during flood relief: ANC Limpopo

Officials and other role players in the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure after the devastating floods in Limpopo must refrain from corruption.

This is the message by African National Congress (ANC) Limpopo deputy chairperson, Florence Radzilani, who was speaking at the Provincial Executive Committee meeting in Polokwane.

Persistent rainfall from last year and the beginning of this year has left schools, roads and houses damaged throughout the province.

Radzilani emphasised the need for accountability in the projects to rebuild public infrastructure.

“As we procure services and goods to rebuild and reconstruct the damaged infrastructure, we urge all role players to desist from criminal and corrupt activities. As expected, women and children in our province were the hardest hit by these collapses and the floods compounded the daily struggles faced by these vulnerable members of our society.”

The party’s provincial secretary Reuben Madadzhe says they will ensure that damaged infrastructure across the province is restored.

“While the full extent of the damage continues to be assessed, the ANC knows the swift compassionate and coordinated response by the ANC structures and the ANC led government in supporting affected communities. We also express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives through the devastating floods, and we appreciate the government response to all the flood stricken areas in the Vhembe and Mopani districts, as well as some parts of Sekhukhune and Capricorn areas. The recent floods in the province have exacerbated the public infrastructure backlog and put additional strain on the limited government fiscal.”

Meanwhile, Radzilani urging members to show discipline and unity ahead and during its 11th provincial conference.

The ANC conference is expected to be held from the 27 – 29 March.

Some regional elective conferences, including the Peter Mokaba and Vhembe regions, were marred by disputes over allegations of bogus delegates and irregularities.

Radzilani says adherence to guidelines will ensure a successful conference.

“As we prepare for the upcoming 11th Provincial Conference and later local government elections, we call on all ANC members and structures to adhere to the guidelines of the BPGMs and the BGMs, as well as those for the selection of candidates for the two events. Let us display military discipline and demonstrate renewal in action.”
