Security personnel contracted to safeguard the Nkomazi Municipal infrastructure have downed tools. They allege that they have not received their January salaries.
Their company is contracted to secure the water pump stations and reservoirs on 65 sites in different villages in the Nkomazi area.
The workers say that their employer claims that the municipality has not paid them for services rendered.
Mfanzile Dlamini, who represents the workers, says it’s not the first time the municipality has failed to pay them.
“We are closing almost every reservoir of Nkomazi Municipality because it is always hard for us to get paid. Now, we are not paid. We are waiting for our payments. We are struggling a lot in this company. Now, in this situation, they used to tell (us) that the municipality doesn’t pay them in time. We even moved from the 1st of each and every month, we are now getting paid on the 15th of each every month,” says Dlamini.
Meanwhile, Nkomazi Municipal Spokesperson, Cyril Repinga, says their records indicate that the service provider was paid early this month.
“We do not know their arrangements but what I can safely say is that we have been talking to the service provider. The last time the municipality paid him was on the 10th of February. That is on record and there are still arrangements. We are still talking to them, all the service providers within the jurisdiction of the municipality, to ensure that they render services expected from them,” says Repinga.
The employer has refused to comment on record but indicated that all employees will be paid today.
