E-Hailing Federation calls on govt to probe attacks on drivers

The National E-Hailing Federation of South Africa (NEFSA) has called on the government to establish a task team that will probe incidents involving attacks on e-hailing drivers.

This comes as concern mounts over the safety of e-hailing drivers following the killing of a driver in Pretoria.

The driver was killed after responding to a trip request and his body was later found abandoned with his hijacked vehicle in Atteridgeville.

The incident was captured on dashcam and four suspects have since been arrested.

Federation President Elijah Uhuru Lekgowane says, “We are calling for the national government [to act] because this is a national crisis now. I can tell you now in Phoenix, in KZN, we’ve already received the news of an attack that happened over the weekend.”

“In Mamelodi, again, in Pretoria East, we have also endured another experience over the weekend where there was an attempted hijack on the driver. As a consequence of that, the driver then shot one of these criminals. So, this is a national crisis which calls for a national response [that’s our] call as NEFSA.”
