E-hailing operators in KwaZulu-Natal are demanding that police make arrests after a driver was assaulted and extorted in Phoenix north of Durban.
It’s alleged three people from a local association assaulted the driver after dropping off a passenger at the Phoenix Plaza on Saturday.
The suspects allegedly held the driver at the association’s offices and demanded R5000 for the return of his vehicle.
E-hailing drivers held a protest outside the police station, demanding action from the local police due to increasing incidents of attacks against them.
The provincial department of transport MEC Siboniso Duma condemned the incident and tasked a team to work on improving relations between the taxi and the e-hailing operators in the area.
Chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal e-Hailing Council Sipho Mabika says they plan to return to the police station on Monday to demand that culprits be arrested.
“They need to go back to arrest those people who were involved in assaulting our driver and asking him for money. We are going to have a meeting with the station commander and the representatives of the department of transport, I think they are going to be there too, and the local councillor of the ward so that we can come into an agreement as to how we are going to work together in the future.”
