One of the scrap metal companies being raided.
The Competition Commission has launched search and seizure operations at the premises of four scrap metal companies operating in Germiston, Nigel, Vanderbijlpark and Hammanskraal.
The operation forms part of an investigation into allegations that major players in the scrap metal industry may have coordinated price adjustments for shredded and processed scrap metal used in the production of long steel products.
Commission spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga says the alleged conduct relates to the fixing of prices or trading conditions, which would be in breach of Section 4(1)(b) of the Competition Act.
“The search and seizure operations are being conducted as part of an ongoing investigation that was initiated by the Commission in February 2026. And during the search, the Commission will seize documents and electronic data, which will be analysed together with other information gathered to determine whether these companies have contravened the Act. The companies under investigation operate as buyers of the shredded or processed scrap metals, which they use in the production of long steel products,” said Makunga.
The Commission says the investigation remains ongoing.
