We are doing our best to fight unemployment: Labour Minister

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth says government is creating a conducive environment to grow industries in order to grow the economy and fight off unemployment.

Speaking on the City Hall precinct, ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) later Thursday evening, Meth says the improvement of the electricity provision with fewer power blackout episodes is one of the indicators that the government is on track to bring about stability and grow the economy.

“Again, the issue of infrastructure development. If you listen to the president, he pronounced R1 trillion for infrastructure for the term 2024 to 2029 and already we’ve started to see that there is creation of jobs in terms of the industries that are performing,” she says.

“We are not there yet, where we would like to be but at least that little decrease in unemployment to us is good news,” she adds.

The number of unemployed people decreased by 360 000 to 8.1 million in the third quarter of 2025.

Meth says she’s hopeful the unemployment rate will continue to decrease.
