Batohi pushed me out of NPA: Adv Maema

Former North West Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Sello Maema says he was pushed out by former National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi.

Maema says he opted for retirement after Batohi allegedly rendered him redundant and removed him from investigating criminal cases.

He is the first defence witness to be called by South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, whose fitness to hold office is being probed at the Nkabinde Inquiry in Pretoria.

“The letter that I received states that my continued involvement in criminal cases places the name of the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) into disrepute. Chairperson, this is an institution I have worked tirelessly for over 31 years. Now, suddenly, because of a decision taken within the scope of my work, I find myself in a position where my continued involvement will allegedly bring the NPA’s name into disrepute. Advocate Shamila Batohi is the one who instructed Advocate Mkhari to remove me from any active work in the NPA.”

Meanwhile, Batohi has sought assistance from the newly appointed National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, after her request for state-funded legal counsel was rejected by Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi.
