Joburg residents urge Ramaphosa to address ongoing water crisis

With only a few hours left before the State of the Nation Address (SONA), some residents in Johannesburg have called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the ongoing water crisis that has left several communities with dry taps.

Residents in the city’s southern suburbs have taken to the streets to protest over water outages that have lasted for weeks.

Communities from Mulbarton, Robertsham, Ridgeway, Ormonde and Winchester Hills have gathered to demand a reliable water supply and better communication from Joburg Water and Rand Water.

Representative for the Johannesburg southern suburbs community, Zubair Patel says, “We want answers, we are tired of being fed lies and fake news. We’ve been told that there is no water in towers, there’s no water in reservoirs, there’s two towers and a reservoir here in Crown Gardens and we are constantly being fed the information. It’s sort of a cut-and-paste exercise on a daily basis.”

“What we want is, we want open and transparent information. It doesn’t help to tell us there’s no water in the towers when there are certain parts of the area that are getting water and they receive water from the Crown Garden’s reservoir and towers as well,” adds Patel.
