Civic Movement, March and March has again called on the government to declare a state of emergency in response to illegal immigration in the country.
The movement has expressed concern about Zama Zamas infiltrating various communities and endangering the lives of residents.
Last month, about 500 residents from the Sporong informal settlement in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg fled their homes following intimidation from illegal miners commonly known as Zama Zamas.
The movement’s Founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma says they want President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy the army to assist police in the removal of illegal foreigners from communities and the country.
“A state of emergency can be declared if a country is being invaded and we do believe that what is currently happening in terms of the influx of illegal immigrants is what we can term as an invasion. So the law does support that and the president can deploy the SANDF. And we thought this would be very important for places that had been taken over by the Zama Zamas and all these other places and towns that have been taken over by illegal immigrants where we can see that the police are clearly not managing to deal with the situation.”
