SA Sevens edge Fiji 21–19 to claim Perth gold medal

The South African Sevens team pulled off a win for the ages when they beat Fiji 21-19 in the final of the Perth Sevens tournament.

The Blitzboks won their second gold medal of the World Rugby sevens series, adding Perth to their win in Cape Town in December.

South Africa moves up to second on the series standings, just behind Fiji.

Ryan Oosthuizen scored two tries in the final against Fiji and said the team culture of the Blitzboks was responsible for the tournament win in Perth.

“I am very happy with the performance whilst playing against Fiji. It is always a battle and we always expect a war against them and today defiantly delivered. I am super proud of our team as I believe that we fought for one another and that’s the Blitzboks standard.”

Meanwhile, Blitzboks coach Philip Snyman says he is proud of the attitude of his players. Snyman says his players fought hard in the heat in Perth.

“We said we want to focus on our attitude and energy on the pitch, if the guys continue with this attitude and energy, it becomes difficult to take them out of the game. All credit goes out to all the players; they played phenomenally in this heat.”
