GP education reaches agreement with scholar transport operators

Gauteng Department of Education says they have reached an amicable agreement with scholar bus transport providers, and full operations are set to resume next Monday.

The two parties were at loggerheads after some service providers were not paid for three months.

Bus operators had halted their services and school children were left stranded, leading to frustrated parents blockading roads in protest.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, says a payment plan will ensure that the education of learners is not disrupted further, as most children rely heavily on scholar transport.

“For this not to happen again, we have also agreed on a payment plan where we both agree on what will be the time frame of course the SLA says it must be 30 days, but we are also going to negotiate that considering our budgetary or financial challenges that we are having, agreeing on what could be the latest and what could be a different module,” says Chiloane.
