Court to rule on Zuma, Thales leave to appeal acquittal bid

Judge Nkosinathi Chili is expected to hand down his ruling on former President Jacob Zuma and French arms company Thales’ application on Wednesday.

Zuma applied for leave to appeal after Chili earlier dismissed their application for acquittal in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Thales, joined by Zuma in the application, had asked to be acquitted.

The company argues that it would suffer prejudice as it couldn’t test evidence led by the state because of the death of two of its former employees who were key witnesses in the case.

Zuma and Thales face charges of racketeering, corruption, fraud and money laundering related to the controversial 1990’s arms deal.
