Retired KZN DPP to testify before the Nkabinde Enquiry

Retired KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Moipone Noko is expected to testify before the Nkabinde Enquiry when it resumes its hearings in Pretoria on Wednesday.

She will be the second witness to testify before the enquiry, which retired Justice Bess Nkabinde chairs.

The enquiry is probing suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold office.

The enquiry was forced to reschedule the resumption of its proceedings after former National Prosecuting Authority head (NPA) Advocate Shamila Batohi walked out during cross-examination.

The enquiry’s term has been extended until June after its initial four-month mandate expired at the end of last month.

Batohi, whose term ended last month, suspended her testimony to seek legal counsel.

Evidence leaders told the enquiry they were struggling to secure witnesses in the racketeering case involving the former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Head and the Cato Manor Police Unit.

Noko was criticised for withdrawing charges against politically connected individuals while pursuing racketeering charges against former Hawks boss Major General Johan Booysen and members of the Cato Manor Police Unit.
