UJ to revolutionalise the housing sector with technology

The University of Johannesburg is looking to revolutionise the housing sector with technology, which makes it possible to build a home in less than a day.

Researchers say they have developed a 3D printer capable of constructing a 40 square metre house in under eight hours.

UJ’s Doctor Jeffrey Mahachi says that the project is a partnership with the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, whose aim is to fast-track the delivery of housing.

He was speaking at the Innovative Building Technology summit in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

“The technology uses cementitious material, and we are also exploring other advanced technologies, advanced materials, such as hemp, clay, Eskom ash, as a substitute for cement in order to fast-track the delivery of houses. We are able to actually print or build a 40 square metre house in less than eight hours.”
