Madlanga Commission postpones hearing after new witness request

Chairperson of the Madlanga Commission, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has granted a postponement following an application by the legal representative of a new witness.

The matter has been postponed to next Tuesday.

The lawyer for the witness, Hartley Ngoato, argued that his client received a second batch of documents only four days before his scheduled appearance, which he said could prejudice his client’s case.

Ngoato told the commission that the legal team had been ready to proceed based on an initial bundle of documents received last month.

Ngoato and his team have also applied for parts of the proceedings to be held in camera.

Advocate Matthew Chaskalson indicated that his questioning would initially focus on WhatsApp screenshot communications involving a list of persons of interest, who are alleged to be the witness’s contacts.

Ngoato told the commission that he requires six days to prepare adequately.

The Madlanga Commission has until March to complete its work.
