Nkabinde Enquiry into Chauke’s fitness to hold office resumes

The Nkabinde Enquiry examines suspended South Gauteng Public Prosecutions Director, Advocate Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold office, will resume in Pretoria today.

It’s unclear whether National Public Prosecutions Director Shamila Batohi – who’s due to retire next week – will return to the witness stand.

Batohi excused herself from the public hearings last month following a heated exchange when Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi had cross-examined her.

Advocate Ngcukaitobi is representing Chauke, whom Advocate Batohi has accused of making questionable decisions in high-profile cases.

The Enquiry’s spokesperson Tiyisela Mpuzana says, “The Nkabinde Enquiry will resume its public hearing following the festive adjournment. The enquiry forms part of the mandate to inquire fitness of Advocate Andrew Chauke to hold office of DPP of South Gauteng. As proceedings resume, evidence will continue to be led through evidence leaders as well as witnesses to be called by the legal team of Advocate Chauke in accordance with the inquiry’s mandate.”
