Two suspects have been killed in a shootout with police at Mahlabathini in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says police acted on intelligence that the suspects were on their way to assassinate a taxi owner.

Police recovered three firearms and ammunition.

Netshiunda says preliminary investigations have confirmed that one of the firearms was reported stolen at Macekane Reserve in Mtunzini.

“The intelligence was operationalised and the suspect’s vehicle was spotted driving along the P700 road in Mahlabathini. Police used blue lights and sirens to instruct the driver of the vehicle to pull over. The driver stopped in the middle of the road.”

“However, in split seconds, two occupants of the vehicle got out of the vehicle and opened fire in the direction of the police. Tactical astute police officers returned fire and a shootout ensued. During the resultant shootout, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded,” adds Netshiunda.
