KZN tackles unemployment caused by skills mismatch among graduates

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli says the province is moving to address what he has described as the sad reality of qualified people who are unemployed because of a skills mismatch.

Ntuli says the provincial government plans to repurpose non-viable schools into skills development centres – aimed at improving employability and growing the economy.

He was speaking at a Human Resource Development Council meeting in Durban, where stakeholders discussed ways to strengthen the province’s human capital.

The council has partnered with the private sector and the Department of Higher Education.

Ntuli is hopeful that the proposed solutions will help attract greater private sector involvement in skills development.

“Working with the private sector, working with the NGOs and the Department of Higher Education, we are hopeful that the information that was presented today by the Department of Education will enable us to invite private sector, public sector, even those who are not from KwaZulu-Natal, to say, here is a platform that you can use to help us to enhance skills that are necessary for the development of this province.”
