Natu, Sadtu to take KZN Education Department to court

Teacher unions, National Teachers’ Union (Natu) and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) say they are planning to take the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department and Provincial Treasury to court.

This is over what they say is a lack of learner and teacher support materials.

It follows a survey that Sadtu and National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) conducted and found that most schools were not prepared to re-open this week.

The unions are concerned that the hardest hit schools are in disadvantaged communities. Natu president Sibusiso Malinga, says going to court should be their last resort.

“Let us try and find an amicable way to deal with this situation. Let all leaders, let all stakeholders sit together, and try to get an amicable solution but if we fail to do that and each and every stakeholder see or find that we are not finding each other that could be the last resort because you know, getting money to court actually is also the waste of money because the department will also take the money that should have been invested in schools and try to defend the case.”
