Du Noon fire victims rebuild homes, Gift of the Givers provides aid

Residents who have been left homeless after a fire swept through the Site 5 informal settlement in Du Noon in Cape Town, on Friday, have started rebuilding their dwellings.

More than 3000 people have been affected and have lost all their belongings. Humanitarian Aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, is on site to assist residents.

Spokesperson Ali Sablay says electrical wires lying around and sewage could cause great danger to the residents.

Sablay says they will remain on site in the coming days.

“Our operations will continue as per normal. We are providing breakfast, lunch and supper with close to 5000 meals per serving. We will be extending our humanitarian service tomorrow and in the coming days,” he adds.

He says the major concern at the moment is school uniform and stationery, as parents have come to them. He says Home Affairs is needed at the site.

“Many children here are undocumented, as all their documents were burned and that’s a big requirement for them going to school. There’s many children starting grade R and grade 1, so we are appealing for Home Affairs to please send their reinforcement here as well, so people can register,” says Sablay.

He says that many elderly people lost their SASSA documents or their cards and that is putting them on the back foot at the moment.
