US actions violate international law, Venezuela’s sovereignty: Cosatu

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says it supports the protest against what has been described as Unites States military invasion of Venezuela.

A coalition of South African trade unions, political groups and civil society organisations will picket outside the American Embassy in Pretoria on Thursday. The organisations condemn what they refer to as the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

Cosatu says US actions violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty.

“The protest today is meant to defend international law, the sovereignty of Venezuela, and the right of its people to determine their own fate without being bombed, without sanctions or kidnapping of the head of state, and the first lady. It’s something that we have seen the US actually do, we’ve seen that in Iraq, we’ve seen that in Afghanistan, we’ve seen that in Libya- and so it is a worrying pattern that we’re looking at, and it’s actually a unilateral action that didn’t even consider the UN Charter,” says Cosatu’s National Spokesperson Zanele Sabela.
