Ntshongweni flood victims in KZN still struggling three years later

More than three years after the devastating 2022 floods, victims in Ntshongweni’s Ward 7 under the eThekwini Municipality continue to struggle.

The residents were among those who survived the torrential rains that battered eThekwini, forcing them into temporary shelters.

Despite repeated promises of permanent housing, many say they have received no support from the government.

As local government elections draw closer, residents say their hopes of assistance continue to fade, even with the possibility of a change in leadership.
One of the victims says the issue has been repeatedly ignored, adding that not a single government official has visited the community.
“We don’t have electricity and water here. Local councilor told us that we will stay here for 6 months, they will start to build houses January 2023 till today we’re still waiting. We don’t even have privacy here as you can see, we share three toilets, and this space isn’t safe,” adds the victim.
