Alleged criminal cartel kingpins dominate 2025 court headlines

Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala was arrested in May this year and has been accused of orchestrating the failed assassination of his ex-partner, Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023.

After spending months at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility in Pretoria, Matlala attempted but failed to convince the court to release him on bail. The state told the court that Matlala is a flight risk and a danger to society.

Matlala has also been accused of being the mastermind behind the 2024 attempted murder of Seunkie Mokubung famously known as “DJ Vettys” and businessman Joe Sibanyoni in 2022.

On Tuesday, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that the alleged drug cartel and attempted murder-accused been moved to a super maximum correctional centre, the eBongweni Correctional Centre in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.

Similarly, Katiso “KT” Molefe is yet another alleged underworld kingpin who spent this year in and out of courts after his arrest in July.  Molefe is accused of facilitating payment to the gunmen who pulled the trigger on Oupa Sefoka also known as “DJ Sumbody” and his two bodyguards in 2022.

Molefe has also been linked to the killing of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. Currently, Molefe is out on R400 000 bail in connection to the murder of DJ Sumbody.
