The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is expected to launch its annual “State of Schools Report” on Wednesday in Johannesburg.
The 2025 report is said to highlight systemic challenges that prevent the enjoyment of the right to basic education.
SAHRC spokesperson Wisani Baloyi says the report also contains analysis and recommendations.
It holds departments accountable for addressing challenges before the start of the 2026 academic year.
“Early this year, the commission visited more than 150 public schools across all nine provinces in the country to assess the readiness of schools to provide teaching and learning during the 2025 academic year. The visits were part of the commission’s monitoring project following complaints lodged with it regarding challenges with access to basic education as enshrined in Section 29 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. The challenges included poor infrastructure, overcrowding, lack of sanitation, and late registrations.”
