Chalkboard with debt written on it
The Newcastle Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal, which is owed R2.1 billion by residents for unpaid rates and services, has launched an initiative called the Debt and Revenue Collection campaign to recoup the monies owed.
Speaker of the municipality Prince Thengamehlo Zulu says the municipality is targeting areas such as Madadeni and Osizweni.
An area where residents and businesses owe the municipality a significant amount of money.
Prince Zulu has encouraged residents to make use of the incentive scheme which will run to the 19th of November to pay their bills at a discounted rate.
“We are here today just to engage them as we know that the situation financially is not good. We have come with a new scheme where decrease a certain percentage. Let’s say you owe us R2 000 and we see that you can pay 50 percent of that, then we write off percent. If you agree to make a debit order, then we write off 75 percent of your debts and you pay 25 percent. For the old people, they must not pay anything. We also do have plans for businesspeople and they must come out and we can write off 50 percent of their debts and pay 50 percent.”
