UFS QwaQwa campus remains closed after violent protests


The University of the Free State says its Bloemfontein and South Campus staff have returned to work, while the Qwaqwa campus remains closed, after severe damage sustained on the campus on Monday.

Students embarked on a violent protest to show their dissatisfaction over the announcement that the institution is doing away with provisional registration.

The university has condemned the violence and says an investigation is underway.

The university’s spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says an interim court order has also been granted to stop any unlawful activity on its campuses.

“There is an investigation underway in terms of what’s happened on this campus. The executive committee of the university condemns these acts of violence in the strongest terms, and also the destruction and the damage to the property. Academic staff will return to the campus in a phased approach and also applied as further program demands. The deans of our faculties will manage this process, and is also in communication with our students and also with staff.”
