Accused one breaks down during testimony at Meyiwa trial

Accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial Muzi Sibiya has broken down in court, as he recounted the experience of being arrested and separated from his family.

Sibiya is testifying for a third day at the High Court in Pretoria, where he and four of his co-accused are on trial for the 2014 murder of Meyiwa.

He has told the court that police facilitated a reunion with his uncle and then transported him to see his family a few days after his arrest in May 2020.

Sibiya claims he was assaulted multiple times by police officers.

He says his parents were distraught upon seeing his condition.

Sibiya describes the emotional impact on him and his family.

“I also explained to my mother that I was arrested by the police and then they’ve been assaulting me and they arrested me for something that I am not even aware of, and they had assaulted me different times.  (I told) my mother that the police, they’re alleging that I have killed Senzo and when I was applying to the police by saying that I don’t know anything about the death of Senzo and I did not kill him, they kept on assaulting me. “
