The University of the Free State (UFS) says it’s assessing the damage to property at its Qwaqwa campus. This follows violent clashes between students, campus security and the police on Monday evening.
Students have been protesting against the university’s decision to discontinue provisional registration from next year.

Student leaders have criticised the move saying it will exclude the poor and working-class students from accessing higher education.
The university has ordered its students to vacate the campus and all academic activities have been suspended until further notice.
UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader says, “In terms of the current status, the university has suspended its lectures on our Bloemfontein campus as well as our south campus. We have also closed the Qwaqwa campus in the eastern Free State and our students have been requested to vacate the residences as well. So, at the moment, that is the situation at the University. We are keeping a close eye on what is happening at our campuses, and we are also assessing the damage on our Qwaqwa campus.”
UFS students face charges of malicious damage to property and attempted arson
