Duo accused of torching Germiston Home Affairs office in court

Two men accused of torching the Home Affairs office in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, are expected to appear before the local magistrate’s court for a possible bail hearing on Tuesday.

Moffatt Phiri and Katlego Simango are facing charges of arson and public violence.

The blaze occurred during an eviction operation last week at the Pharoe Park flats in Germiston.

Residents expressed their frustrations, saying that they feel terrorised by the City of Ekurhuleni.

This follows a court order obtained by the city’s sheriff to evict residents deemed to be unlawfully occupying the units and not paying.

More than 400 households were evicted from the flats as a result. Their furniture and personal belongings were removed from the units even in cases where occupants were not present.
