A sixth inmate has succumbed to injuries while in hospital following the crash on the R101 between Mokopane and Mookgophong in Limpopo.
A police officer also died during the crash.
It happened when a police van that was transporting 11 inmates to court in Mookgophong collided with a heavy-duty truck.
Preliminary investigations show that the driver of the police van attempted to overtake the truck and collided with it and overturned.
Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba says, “We were alerted as the police in Limpopo that another inmate has passed away. This brings the number to six inmates that succumbed to their injuries.”
Mashaba adds: “This is a devastating loss to the police as well as to the affected families. Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy. A thorough investigation will be conducted to establish the cause of the accident.”
