The City of Johannesburg has raised concerns over some spaza shop owners’ non-compliance with the City’s by-laws. Out of the nearly 4 000 applications received, many have been found to be either incomplete or invalid.
This emerged during a spaza shop training session held in Ennerdale, southern Johannesburg, this week.
Spaza shop owners were required to register their businesses between November and the end of February this year, following a presidential proclamation.
Benji Seitlhamo from Johannesburg’s Economic Development Department says they’ve found widespread non-compliance with City regulations.
“For example, of the 1 774 Spaza shop applications received in Region G, only 21 had both the necessary health and fire certificates.”
He has also highlighted issues such as operating illegally, submitting incomplete documents, and fraudulent certificates, which he says pose challenges to the city’s enforcement and regulatory framework.
