The North West University (NWU) says it will continue to invest in the youth through various programmes.

The institution says it aims to empower young people through their academic journey and address societal challenges.

The Pick-a-Leader project is one of the initiatives that focuses on equipping learners with leadership skills.

Grade 9, 10 and 11 learners at Resolofetse Secondary School in Ikageng, Potchefstroom are part of the project. The university’s Corrie Rheeder elaborates: “A lot of them finished secondary education, moved on to tertiary education and got their degrees and honours degrees. So we are so proud of the programme. Learners always come back and give us positive feedback. Some of them enter the job market instead of studying further, but really try to make a difference in their communities as well.”

These learners say they have benefitted from the programme.

“Last year’s programme educated us about STIs, STDs, and HIV, and ways to prevent them, and how we behave around infected people.I can say Pick-a-Leader is gonna assist me to stand for myself and to believe in myself, because it teaches us and makes us believe in ourselves.”
