Infants stolen from Gqeberha hospital found, two suspects arrested

Eastern Cape Police have arrested two women aged 25 and 26 in connection with the abduction of two infants at Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

The babies are two days and four days old. They were allegedly stolen from the maternity ward on Tuesday night.]

Police Spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg says one of the SAPS officers was busy exiting the premises of the hospital when he noticed two women.

“The suspicions of the member were positive after the infants were identified as the two stolen babies. The two female suspects, aged 25 and 26, will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate Court during the week. The acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, commended the dedicated SAPS team who worked tirelessly since the kidnapping was reported. We are grateful that they were found and that they can be reunited with their mothers.”

Family members say they are appalled by the neglect and poor supervision in the maternity ward of the hospital.
