The Public Servants Association (PSA) has called on the Auditor-General to investigate the financial conduct of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health.
The call comes after reports revealed that the department owes suppliers an alarming sum of R1.7 billion, with many invoices over 90 days overdue.
The association says this has negatively affected the quality of the services provided at the province’s hospitals.
PSA provincial organiser, Xolani Dhlamini has called on the premier to address the situation.
“If this was an ordinary misconduct by the ordinary employee or a member consequence management could have come to the fore. So we are calling now upon the accounting officers to face the consequence management. So then we are saying the premier must hold the bull by its horn. And if the premier is unable to do so then we will be escalating this issue to the minister to intervene in order to make a point that our health system in KZN becomes stable.”
